Coping with Dasher’s Setback
It’s with a heavy heart that I share Dasher will need to return to the Referral Vet Practice, where he underwent surgery for his Osteochondritis Dissecans. This condition involves the cartilage detaching in his shoulder joint, which can only be described as a persistent nuisance, much like having a stone in your shoe.
As a behaviourist and trainer, I've come to understand the importance of maintaining a balanced perspective when faced with challenging news. It reminds me of watching my granddaughter learning to ride her bike; the skill and focus required in that simple act are often taken for granted. Just as she needs to adjust her balance and know when to stop, I, too, must navigate this situation with care as I support Dasher.
While we wait for his appointment, I’m adapting his training to focus on retrieve and scent games that won’t strain his sore joint. It’s crucial that we face this challenge head-on, acknowledging both our emotional responses and the practical steps we can take. I've noticed that clients who confront difficulties rather than shy away from them tend to find greater success.
Coping with setbacks is indeed a skill, one that every dog owner inevitably encounters on their journey. I’ll keep you updated on Dasher's progress as we work to stay balanced and navigate the twists and turns of this unexpected challenge. Thank you for your understanding and support during this time.
